Following the success of the Distillers Reserve editions of Hakushu and Yamazaki, they have decided to release an older, more exclusive limited edition of the Yamazaki single malt. Although the exact makeup of the 2015 Limited Edition remains under wraps, it was disclosed that the whisky spent time ageing in sherry and port casks, amongst others.
This new nectar created by Suntory Chief Master Blender is an blend of several single malts distilled and aged in Yamazaki, the very first malt distillery of Japan.
With the 2015 release Suntory decided to use some single malts aged over 20 years in sherry cask and blend it with some aged in younger bourbon barrels.
In addition; the 2014 edition has the distillery screen printed on the bottle whilst the 2015 release has an image of the stills.
About Yamazaki
The Yamazaki Distillery, established in 1923 by Shinjiro Torii as Japan's first malt whisky distillery, is the birthplace of Japanese whisky, a result of Torii's vision to create a unique whisky using a Japanese climate and pure water sources. After sending Masataka Taketsuru to learn from Scottish whisky masters, Yamazaki began production in 1924, laying the foundation for Suntory's now world-famous Japanese whiskies. The distillery's success was cemented by international acclaim, including Yamazaki Sherry Cask 2013 winning World Whisky of the Year, bringing global recognition to Japanese whisky.
