Ardbeg Drum Feis Ile (2019) 70cl

An old bottle of Ardbeg Drum, which was a limited edition bottling released on Ardbeg Day at the 2019 Feis Ile, as has now become traditional.

Ardbeg Drum is an assemblage of ex-bourbon casks of Ardbeg of an unspecified age which were then reracked into rum casks which have added some nice pineapple and cooked banana notes to Ardbeg's traditional tarry citrus character.

This Limited Edition Single Malt Whisky from Ardbeg Distillery takes whisky from ex-Bourbon casks, that have been rested a while in ex-rum casks from the Americas. A flamboyant jamboree of flavours with fragrant pine resin, woodsmoke and seas pray dancing alongside ripe banana and pineapple. Lavender, liquorice and vanilla sway into rich dark chocolate before parading to the beat of a long and smoky finish.

Ardbeg Drum takes the classic, peaty Islay single malt, matured in bourbon casks, and finishes it in ex-rum casks to add bittersweet molasses, banana and chocolate complexity.

Tasting Notes

Nose : Bonfire wood smoke intertwines with earthy pine, as sweeter tropical aromas of ripe banana, banana bread and pineapple come to the fore. Some richer notes of dark chocolate and candied ginger add depth.

Palate : Loads of spices, with pepper, clove, cinnamon and more ginger surrounded by swirls of earthy smoke, with sweeter notes of liquorice, even more dark chocolate and vanilla pod.

Finish : Roasted, slightly burnt coffee beans, and sweet cinnamon and cocoa.

About Ardbeg

Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky since 1798. The distillery is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky. The distillery uses malted barley sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen.

The Ardbeg distillery was officially founded in 1815 by John McDougall. But Whisky was distilled there long before that. There are no documentations, as Ardbeg was an illegal business back in 1794. The distillery is now owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), which also owns Glenmorangie distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. The current capacity is just over one million litres per annum and its water source is Loch Uigeadail, after which one of its famous releases is named.
