The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler. These curiously named drams really do have something for every whisky lover!

The SMWS are one of the Britain's most revered independent bottlers with a worldwide network of partner bars with one mission of getting as much whisky at natural cask strength without water to different nations including USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Germany and many others.

TASTING NOTES

Through the darkness came a thick treacle of golden syrup, nut oils and heavy tar stuck on wellington boots alongside clumps of clean earth that suggested rhubarb and roasted root vegetables. Toasted pine nuts and crispy bacon created a delicious cooperation that moved into cardamom, cloves and cured meats. With water more tar tangled with coal and scorched earth but now suggested creamy textures and medicinal melodies. Dry smoke married a delicious sweetness on the palate as Battenberg cake arrived rolled in charcoal and ash. Notes of burning heather and chimney soot combined on a finish that retained hints of fruit and sweet oak.

This whisky was distilled on 1st October 2013 and aged in a single re-charred hogshead for 6 years.

About Glenturret

Glenturret claims to be one of the oldest distilleries in Scotland, although it was dismantled for over 25 years before James Fairlie built a new facility within the walls of the former site in 1959, using old equipment procured from Perthshire neighbours, Tullibardine. Despite using traditional whisky-making methods, the distillery was also a pioneer, opening Scotland’s second ever visitor centre in 1981. It was then transformed into the home of The Famous Grouse by Edrington in 2002, before changing hands again in 2018 when it was bought by the owner of Lalique crystal. With former Macallan whisky maker, Bob Dalgarno at the helm, the new ownership relaunched the Glenturret single malt brand in 2020 with a predictably luxurious new bottle design.
