Peerless 5 Year Old 2016 SMWS Single Charred New Oak Barrel RW4.2 Second To None Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey (2021) 70cl

1 of 179 bottles produced from a new charred oak barrel.

This is one of the best bourbons we have ever tasted consisting mainly of rye. This behaves more like a bourbon than a rye whiskey.

The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.

It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler. These curiously named drams really do have something for every whisky lover!

The SMWS are one of the Britain's most revered independent bottlers with a worldwide network of partner bars with one mission of getting as much whisky at natural cask strength without water to different nations including USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Germany and many others.

TASTING NOTES

A cascade of descriptors which included banana bread, fudge, butterscotch, figs, bramble jam, brown sugar, gorse flowers, toasted oak and marmalade were mentioned on the nose neat. A dark juicy earthiness on the palate, flambéed pineapple rings, singed orange peel and toasted coconut panna cotta alongside a black cherry berry tea. Diluted like a warm prawn and seaweed salad, melted salted butter as well as maple-orange spice coated macadamia nuts. To taste at first cannelloni of gingerbread, kirsch mousse and cinnamon ice cream was followed by Seville oranges and cardamom Crème Brûlée and, in the never-ending finish, charred pepper, cloves and spearmint.

About Peerless

The first Peerless whiskey went into barrel in 1889.

We've revived the craft in our state-of-the-art distillery.
Select Peerless grains are milled, cooked, fermented, double-distilled, and barrelled as bourbon and rye under one roof. We invite you to experience every aspect of crafting Kentucky straight bourbon and rye from grain to bottle in downtown Louisville.

Originally operating as Worsham Distilling Company, Kentucky Peerless Distilling Company began in Henderson, Kentucky in the early 1880s. In 1889, Peerless Whiskey production began to flourish under the leadership of the entrepreneur. and our ancestor, Henry Kraver.

Kraver wasted no time making upgrades to machinery and investing in additional warehouses that eventually became U.S. Federally Bonded following the Bottled-in-Bond Act of 1897. Thus, the production of Peerless whiskey raised substantially from eight to over two hundred barrels a day. Through the early 1920s, the Peerless federally-bonded warehouses were used for whiskey storage under the armed protection of the U.S. Government. During Prohibition, Peerless product was one of the few available by prescription for medicinal use. The original Kentucky Peerless Distilling Co. was Distilled Spirits Plant (DSP) number 50. Today, we are privileged to have that same number. The newly assigned DSP numbers are in the 20,000s. We are delighted to say DSP-KY-50 is our own.

Not only have Corky and Carson personally revived the Peerless heritage, but they have also restored history by designing and rebuilding the remarkable distillery as it exists in downtown Louisville today. The Peerless distillery is now a state-of-the-art facility with cutting-edge technology, making it one of the most automated distilleries. All under one roof, select Kentucky Peerless grains are milled, cooked, fermented, double-distilled, barrelled, and bottled as bourbon and rye whiskey.
