Yoichi Apple Brandy Wood Finish Single Malt Masataka & Rita 100th Wedding Anniversary Japanese Single Malt Whisky (2020) 70cl
This commemorative bottle is of huge significance for the Japanese history of whisky!
On 8 January 1920, Nikka founder Masataka Takesturu married Jessie Roberta Cowan, better known as Rita, in Glasgow.
This year Nikka would like to commemorate their 100th wedding anniversary with this limited edition .
This Yoichi single malt was finished in ex-Brandy casks and bottled in 2020. Apples are a strong symbol for Nikka and often associated with the relationship between Rita and Masataka Taketsuru: they began their business with the production of apple juices and jams while they waited for their first whiskeys to mature.
Tasting Notes
Nose : rich, deep. First, a thin dusting of ash covers the apples that have just been removed from the oven. Peat takes over, alternating between dry and oily and bringing a stark contrast to the aromatic palette. Gradually, these scents and intense smoke appear with Yoichi's style.
Palate : fine, complex. Unlike the nose, the attack is noticeably fruity (candied apple and pear), a light peat accumulates around the flavor palette. On the palate, the aromatic herbs (lemon balm and chervil) are evidence of a wonderful herbaceous development. In the end, nuts and apples close the tasting journey.
Finish : long, round. Perfectly balanced, with notes of liquorice and vanilla, grapefruit and lemon zest bring some liveliness to the finish as the peat dries onto straw. Dried fruit (almond, hazelnut and date) and toasted bread aromas complement each other perfectly on the nose. The empty glass is a subtle mixture of ripe apple, peat and hay.
About Yoichi
The Yoichi distillery, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, is Nikka's first distillery, located in the Hokkaido region of Japan to replicate Scotland's climate and natural conditions. Yoichi whiskies are known for their bold, full-bodied, peaty, and maritime character, influenced by the local sea breeze and coal-fired direct distillation. Visitors can tour the historic stone buildings, see the traditional equipment, and learn about the history of Japanese whisky at the distillery's museum and tasting room.
