Miyagikyo Apple Brandy Wood Finish Single Malt Masataka & Rita 100th Wedding Anniversary Japanese Single Malt Whisky (2020) 70cl

This commemorative bottle is of huge significance for the Japanese history of whisky!

On 8 January 1920, Nikka founder Masataka Takesturu married Jessie Roberta Cowan, better known as Rita, in Glasgow.
This year Nikka would like to commemorate their 100th wedding anniversary with this limited edition .

This Miyagikyo single malt was finished in ex-Brandy casks and bottled in 2020. Apples are a strong symbol for Nikka and often associated with the relationship between Rita and Masataka Taketsuru: they began their business with the production of apple juices and jams while they waited for their first whiskeys to mature.

Tasting Notes

Nose : rich, deep. First, a thin dusting of ash covers the apples that have just been removed from the oven. Peat takes over, alternating between dry and oily and bringing a stark contrast to the aromatic palette. Gradually, these scents and intense smoke appear with Yoichi's style.

Palate : fine, complex. Unlike the nose, the attack is noticeably fruity (candied apple and pear), a light peat accumulates around the flavor palette. On the palate, the aromatic herbs (lemon balm and chervil) are evidence of a wonderful herbaceous development. In the end, nuts and apples close the tasting journey.

Finish : long, round. Perfectly balanced, with notes of liquorice and vanilla, grapefruit and lemon zest bring some liveliness to the finish as the peat dries onto straw. Dried fruit (almond, hazelnut and date) and toasted bread aromas complement each other perfectly on the nose. The empty glass is a subtle mixture of ripe apple, peat and hay.

About Miyagikyo

Miyagikyo Distillery, founded in 1969, is a testament to the vision of Masataka Taketsuru, the "Father of Japanese Whisky." Located in Sendai, Miyagi Prefecture, the distillery is surrounded by nature, with the Hirose and Nikkawa Rivers providing a serene backdrop. Taketsuru's philosophy of respecting nature is evident in the distillery's design, with buildings set at varying levels to preserve the natural topography. The distillery's production methods, including the use of Coffey stills, contribute to the unique flavors of its whiskies, which are softer and more elegant than those from Yoichi. Visitors can enjoy a free tour, tasting sessions, and exclusive whiskies at the distillery.
