The Scotch Malt Whisky Society was founded in Edinburgh in 1983 by Phillip 'Pip' Hills who, while travelling around Scotland in the 1970s, fell in love with whiskies drawn straight from the cask. After he expanded his syndicate the Society was purchased by Glenmorangie PLC in 2004. In 2015, the Society was sold back to private investors. In June 2021, the private owners floated the holding company The Artisanal Spirits Company plc on the Alternative Investment Market of the London Stock Exchange.
It has a unique code system where the first number refers to the distillery and the second refers to the cask from which the bottle comes. SMWS also offers the largest range of distilleries of any independent bottler. These curiously named drams really do have something for every whisky lover!
The SMWS are one of the Britain's most revered independent bottlers with a worldwide network of partner bars with one mission of getting as much whisky at natural cask strength without water to different nations including USA, Canada, Switzerland, UK, Austria, Germany and many others.
TASTING NOTES
This product is an enchanting combination of substantial cask influence and light spirit. The nose reveals aromas of caramelized chestnuts, liquorice root, treacle, prunes, and tea chests. On the palate, it offers delightful flavors such as marmalade, fruitcake, and tea-smoked duck. With a reduced nose, you can expect notes of Chinese spare ribs, burnt sugar, Pedro Ximenez, cut privet, and latex gloves. Adding water makes the palate more approachable, with velvety sweetness, dry woodiness, and deep fruity notes of plum stones and fig jam. The finish is long, warm, and complex, leaving a lovely tingling sensation. This particular expression from the distillery is triple-distilled and unpeated.
About Hazelburn
Hazelburn is a triple-distilled, unpeated single malt whisky produced at the Springbank Distillery in Campbeltown, Scotland. It is known for its creamy, delicate, and light profile, making it a favorite among whisky enthusiasts. The Hazelburn range includes various expressions, such as the 10 Year Old and the 2025 Edition Sherry Wood, each offering a unique flavor profile. The production process involves triple distillation, using unpeated air-dried malt, and is bottled on-site at 46% ABV unless otherwise stated. Hazelburn represents a commitment to traditional methods, with a focus on craftsmanship and precision in the whisky-making process.
Springbank Distillery is the oldest, independent and family owned malt whisky distillery in Scotland having been founded in 1828 in Campbeltown at the foot of the Mull of Kintyre on the west coast of Scotland. Springbank produces three different types of malt whisky including Hazelburn which is non-peated and triple distilled and was first produced in 1997 and first released at the age of 8 years in 2005. The barley is spread across traditional malting floors at Springbank where it germinates and is then dried by hot air on the perforated floor of the malt kiln. The name Hazelburn is in memory of Hazelburn Distillery which was once one of the largest and now one of Campbeltown’s many lost distilleries and operated in the centre of the town from 1825 until 1925.
