Mars Komagatake 2016 Single Shinshu Aging 1st Fill Bourbon Cask #3705 Japanese Single Malt Whisky (2022) 70cl

1 of 193 bottles produced from a single first fill bourbon cask.

Japanese whisky ages beautifully in conditions that are not present in Scotland. Mars operate two distilleries. Shinshu and Tsunuki. they are the real deal when it comes to distillation and maturation. We have visited their sites and can confirm that what you get is spectacular. Once you try Mars once, that is pretty much it for you.

LMDW are supposed to send Mars to the UK but they choose not to despite having an agreement for us to be supplied. So Whisky Situation are here to the rescue pretty much.

With this new limited edition, Mars Whisky unveils an uncompromising version of its iconic single malt, named Komagatake after a peak located not far from the distillery.

Distilled and aged in the Shinshu winery in the heart of the Japanese Alps at an altitude of 800 meters, this collector's whisky reveals a refined, fruity and fresh profile. Its rather complex nose reveals notes of vanilla, exotic fruits and aromatic plants. On the palate, vanilla lingers while being joined by citrus aromas of lemon and grapefruit and gourmet notes of coconut pie. A few honeyed notes appear in a long and invigorating finish that will leave fruity notes of yellow melon, banana and fresh walnuts in the aftertaste.

This edition is an exclusive bottling of a carefully selected first-fill ex-Bourbon cask that matured the Komagatake single malt distilled in 2016.

About Mars

Japan's highest distillery, Shinshu was built by the whisky division of the Hombo Shuzo Co, known as Mars, in 1985. It is located in Miyada, a village in the Nagano Prefecture, and operated for seven years before being mothballed in 1992. Despite being relatively successful in their native market, Mars had not had the success of its competitors Nikka and Suntory on the global stage, and the struggling Japanese whisky market at the time forced the company's hand. In the subsequent years however, things began to improve, and Shinshu distillery was eventually re-opened in 2011. Mars bottles its single malt under the Komagatake brand, and have also opened a sister distillery called Tsunuki to provide for its popular blends.
