Made using Indian 6-row barley from the Himalayan foothills, Brilliance is matured in bourbon barrels for 3-5 years before bottling at cask strength. (As with Amrut, the tropical climate cause greater evaporation, around 12-13% a year, but in turn they show very well at younger ages.)

Tasting Notes 

Nose : Fresh with an immediate coastal familiarity. The youthful nose has structured malt and honey which mingles with a floral overtone all seemingly pinned down by a cork-wood wrapped in banana leaf with a light drizzling of vanilla infused caramel.

Palate : At first quite creamy then quickly develops some good spice of mace and nutmeg mixed in with the honey found in the aroma. There is a tropical fruitiness mid palate which never becomes too prominent, instead being overruled by well structured vanilla and oak.

Finish : Lots of delicious vanilla and a final hint of sea salt caramels.

About Paul John 

John Distilleries PVT Ltd. was founded in 1992 by Paul P. John. He is a first generation entrepreneur with degrees in law and commercial economics. The company is headquartered in Bangalore, while production takes place in Goa. In the early years, the company was mainly involved in the production of blended whisky, brandy and wine. This led to sales of over 10 million cases of Original Choice (the company's flagship) per year, making it the leading brand in the Indian whisky market. In 2008, the decision was made to also start producing single malt whisky, in order to penetrate the premium market. The name of this whisky became Paul John Single Malt. The distillery has a set of two copper pot stills (one for the wash and one for the spirit) that can produce 3000 litres per day. Maturation takes place in an underground, climate-controlled space, there are approximately 10,000 Bourbon barrels. Master Distiller Michael John (no relation) has a number of idiosyncratic methods. The wash has an alcohol percentage of only 5%, normally 8%, which leads to more sweetness in the spirit. The spirit is casked at a strength of 55%. Due to the tropical climate and an Angel's Share of 10 to 12%, the whisky has a cask strength of 57% after three years. Apart from the limited use of peat (Scottish), all ingredients come from India. Since May 2013, Paul John has released two permanent whiskies, Brilliance and Edited, both four to five years old. In addition, there are limited edition single cask bottlings available.
