Linkwood 14 Year Old 2010 Signatory Vintage Vintage Collection 1st Fill Bolgheri Hogsheads Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2024) 70cl

A small batch Linkwood 14-year-old assembled from whiskies distilled in 2010 and bottled at 46% without colouring or chill filtration by Signatory Vintage in 2024.

This 14-year-old Linkwood was bottled from a batch of first fill hogshead casks that previously held the excellent Tuscan red wine Bolgheri and looks like fantastic value for fans of red wine-finished single malt whiskies.

This whisky exudes a fascinating bouquet as soon as you open it. Dark berries such as blackberries and blackcurrants combine with sweet, fruity accents of dried apricots. Juicy cherries are revealed on the palate , followed by an elegant spice - think of freshly ground cardamom, coffee, light leather and a hint of tobacco. The aftertaste? Long and seductive, with gentle oak notes and velvety fruitiness that linger pleasantly.

The Bolgheri region in Tuscany regularly produces top-quality wines that have an excellent reputation around the world. With a maturation period of 14 years in these particularly fine wine barrels, the single malt scotch impresses with an extraordinary variety of aromas. The Linkwood 2010/2024 whisky is bottled without coloring and unfiltered and has a strong drinking strength of 46% vol. - a real treat for all friends of whisky matured in wine barrels.

TASTING NOTES

Nose: Versatile notes with dark fruits such as blackberries, cherries and blackcurrants. Also dried apricots and spices.

Palate: Full-bodied fruit notes are followed by a slightly dry spiciness. Initially cherries and red berries, then powerful tannins, light leather, tobacco and coffee spiced with cardamom.

Finish: Persistent oak spice and velvety fruitiness in harmonious harmony.

About Signatory Vintage

Perthshire-based independent bottler and owner of Edradour distillery. Signatory is an independent bottler with a vigorous release policy, and usually some 50 different single malt expressions are available at any one time. Whiskies are bottled across a number of ranges, including the Un-chill Filtered Collection, the Cask Strength Collection and the Single Grain Collection.

Signatory bottling, bonding and office facilities are located in a building adjacent to Edradour distillery, near Pitlochry in Perthshire, which the company also owns. Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky was established in 1988 by Andrew Symington, who had previously managed the prestigious Prestonfield House Hotel in Edinburgh. The first cask bottled by Symington was a 1968 Sherry-cask-matured Glenlivet.

Signatory was initially based in the Newhaven area of Edinburgh, where a bottling plant was developed, but in 2002 the firm acquired Edradour distillery from Pernod Ricard, and subsequently moved all of its operations north to the picturesque Perthshire location.

A new bottling plant and a warehousing complex were constructed, strictly in keeping with the vernacular architectural style which prevails at the much-visited and diminutive former farm distillery.

About Linkwood

Linkwood is another of the light Speyside camp. The new make has the aroma of a spring meadow – mixing cut grass, apple and peach blossom.

When mature, however, although Linkwood's freshness is retained the palate reveals a thick texture which slows the whisky down in the mouth. It is this combination of texture and delicacy which makes it prized by blenders – and much loved by malt whisky aficionados. The fragrance is achieved by creating very clear wort, having a very long fermentation and distilling (slowly to maximise copper conversation) in pairs of stills in which the spirit is larger than the wash, allowing even more copper contact.

Located on the outskirts of Elgin (though now within its ever-growing suburbs) Linkwood was established in 1821, but only started production in 1824. Owner Peter Brown was the factor [manager] of the Linkwood Estate and wisely kept his nose clean until the 1823 Excise Act was on the stature book.

It was completely rebuilt in 1874 by his son William and existed as an independent distiller, run by an Elgin-based whisky broker, until 1932 when it joined the DCL stable. It has remained in production ever since, with regular upgrades taking place, most significantly in 1972 when a new distillery was built opposite the old buildings.

Both plants ran until 1985 when the original ceased production, although it was still used as an experimental site – it was here that a lot of Diageo’s research into copper, reflux and the effect of worm tubs took place. In the late 1990s it was on the shortlist to become the Speyside representative in The Classic Malts range.

In 2012, the old building was demolished as part of yet another upgrade. This time six new washbacks were installed in a new distillery along with two new stills. Capacity is now in excess of 5.5m litres per annum.

Linkwood is bottled as a 12-year-old in Diageo’s Flora & Fauna range, and for many years quasi-official bottlings have come from Gordon & MacPhail of Elgin – often from ex-Sherry casks. Other independent bottlings appear fairly regularly.
