The penultimate part in the Young series from Ardbeg, spanning the development of Ardbeg, from Very Young, all the way up to 10 years. This was distilled in 1998, and offers lots of complexity and a unique look into the maturation of Ardbeg single malt.
This promising Ardbeg, first released in 2004, is now released another year older, as we follow the path to Ardbeg 10 years old. 'Almost There' has developed robustly, with more rounded and full-flavoured Ardbeg characteristics.
The path to maturity 1998 - 2008
Since the distillery re-opened in 1997, many enthusiasts of Ardbeg have been keen to sample our work in progress - none more so than the worldwide aficionados of the Ardbeg Committee. It was to them that we released a limited bottling of 'Very Young' Ardbeg for discussion and comment. 'Still Young' Ardbeg was bottled in 2006 and 'Almost There' Ardbeg is now the third and final limited release along the peaty road to full maturity.
About Ardbeg
Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky since 1798. The distillery is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky. The distillery uses malted barley sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen.
The Ardbeg distillery was officially founded in 1815 by John McDougall. But Whisky was distilled there long before that. There are no documentations, as Ardbeg was an illegal business back in 1794. The distillery is now owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), which also owns Glenmorangie distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. The current capacity is just over one million litres per annum and its water source is Loch Uigeadail, after which one of its famous releases is named.
