Ardbeg Blaaack Feis Ile Ardbeg Day Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2020) 70cl
Ahead of the online celebration of Ardbeg Day 2020 on the 30th May, Ardbeg has released its very first black bottle - Ardbeg Blaaack. Matured in New Zealand wine casks, Blaack has aromas of summer fruits, cigar box, smoky jam tarts and toasted oak on the nose. The palate offers sweet and savoury notes of cherries, strawberries, dark chocolate, coffee and bitter almonds.
Ardbeg Blaaack knits together velvety summer fruit pudding and bitter cherry, with a deeper edge of soot and Ardbeg’s hallmark smoke.
This single malt was matured in Pinot Noir casks from New Zealand! Well then, we suppose it is a bit different! The name was inspired by another thing New Zealand is well-known for - sheep! Apparently there are seven sheep for every one person in the country. That's... That's a lot of sheep.
Tasting Notes
Nose : baked fruit pudding knits together seamlessly with cedar wood and aromatic cigar box. Oak tannins and rich truffles then break away to reveal subtle notes of smoky jam tart. With a splash of water, intense aromas of bitter cherry and a curiously zesty note emerges. Naturally, this dram then travels in a different direction with lovely fragrant violet notes.
Flavour : A velvety and surprisingly furry mouthfeel drives your palate into a complex symphony of contrasting flavours. Aniseed, soot and summer fruits – such as cherries, strawberries, apricots and pears – give way to crumbly pastry, dark chocolate, coffee and almonds.
Finish : A long, lingering sooty finish.
About Ardbeg
Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky since 1798. The distillery is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky. The distillery uses malted barley sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen.
The Ardbeg distillery was officially founded in 1815 by John McDougall. But Whisky was distilled there long before that. There are no documentations, as Ardbeg was an illegal business back in 1794. The distillery is now owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), which also owns Glenmorangie distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. The current capacity is just over one million litres per annum and its water source is Loch Uigeadail, after which one of its famous releases is named.
