Ardbeg Grooves Limited Edition Islay Single Malt Scotch Whisky (2018) 70cl
Ardbeg Grooves was released in celebration of Ardbeg Day 2018, and as ever, the Islay-based distillers have created a most intriguing expression. Part of the whisky that makes up Grooves was matured in red wine casks that were very well-charred, resulting in heavy grooves in the surface of the wood. A mellow though flavoursome dram.
To quote Ash Williams; "Groovy".
With its 1960s-inspired logo, Ardbeg has tried to recreate vibes of ‘Peat and Love’ with Grooves, which was matured in red-wine casks that were heavily charred, so much so that they made grooves in the wood, adding intensity to the final whisky. Expect aromas of smoked cinnamon, paprika, tar and sea spray alongside spicy cured meat, white pepper and herbs.
From the experimental folk at Ardbeg comes this intensely mellow dram, produced using our grooviest casks ever. Smoked spices combine with distant bonfires fading into a mellow haze of apples and smoked pear.
Tasting Notes
Nose : Intense aromas of smoked cinnamon and paprika, antique leather and saddle soap, with classic Ardbeg scents of pine resin, tar and briny sea spray in the background. A distant hint of a fragrant bonfire by the shores of the distillery and, finally, an unusual savoury note, like chilli-seasoned meats. A little splash of water releases some beautiful, unexpected aromas: lavender scented soap, ground white pepper, floral and herbal notes entwined. Fresh flowers mix with coriander leaves and mint.
Taste : A powerfully salty mouthfeel drifts into sweet vibes of treacle toffee, vanilla popcorn, salted fruits (peaches) with soot and tar. Again, those distinctive savoury notes of smoky BBQ, paprika and mustard spice, fading into an unexpected haze of smoked pears and apples, almost like pear cider.
Finish : Smoked paprika and bonfires with a mellow sweetness throughout.
About Ardbeg
Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky since 1798. The distillery is owned by Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy, and produces a heavily peated Islay whisky. The distillery uses malted barley sourced from the maltings in Port Ellen.
The Ardbeg distillery was officially founded in 1815 by John McDougall. But Whisky was distilled there long before that. There are no documentations, as Ardbeg was an illegal business back in 1794. The distillery is now owned by LVMH (Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy), which also owns Glenmorangie distillery in the Highlands of Scotland. The current capacity is just over one million litres per annum and its water source is Loch Uigeadail, after which one of its famous releases is named.
