Jack Daniel's Single Barrel Select Plaza Wine and Liquors Tennessee Whiskey (2010) 75cl

The single barrel release is the signature offering from one of the largest whisky sellers in the world. Specially selected for the Plaza Wine & Liquors bottled in 2010 so this spirit is distilled in approximately 2002/2003. It is the older bottle shape before the diamond machining which have the classy classic look to them. Less finely contoured I guess...

The annual special releases are of a high collectible importance for Jack Daniel's fans and some are from well established liquor spots.

TASTING NOTES

NOSE: This single barrel is clearly built on the bones of the standard Jack Daniel’s Old No. 7 offering. A delicious dose of banana bread, caramel, and heavily toasted oak, along with the slightest hint of ethanol are immediately noticeable. However, unlike the standard Jack Daniel’s, I’m happy to go back and keep smelling the nose on this whiskey. It’s an overall simple profile that is easy to enjoy and appreciate.
PALATE: Caramel, toasted oak, and dried banana chips are immediately noticeable. The whiskey has a simple sweet flavor profile and medium-weight mouthfeel that allows it to easily be rolled around in my mouth. In fact, it drinks more like an 80 proof whiskey versus the actual 94 proof that it’s bottled at.
FINISH: The finish is fairly one-dimensional, consisting of chewy charred oak and a dash of brown sugar mixed with white pepper. The finish lasts for a long time, with a peppery, dry, chewy charred oak taste that lingers for quite a while after the sip. After a tasty nose and palate, I was hoping that the finish would round out the experience. Instead, the finish is just average due heavily to its one-dimensional flavor profile.

About Jack Daniel's

Jack Daniel's is the best-selling American whiskey in the world. Despite that fact it can legally be categorised as a straight bourbon, it has always shunned this title, preferring to market itself as a Tennessee Whiskey. These are similar to straight bourbons but have the additional requirement of having been filtered through maple wood charcoal, a practice known as the Lincoln County Process. History has not always given the distillery an easy ride though. Tennessee was an early adopter of Prohibition in 1910, and one of the last to repeal it in 1938 (five years later than the repeal at Federal level). Even today the distillery is still located in a "dry" county, meaning none of its products are sold in its hometown or those around it. The distillery was then only operational for four years before being forced to close again during the second world war. Ten years later it was purchased by the Brown-Forman corporation and its fortunes turned for good. Its classic black-labelled Old No.7 brand (named after the distillery’s original DSP number) is now a globally recognised product.
