Miyagikyo 10 Year Old Nikka Whisky (2009) 70cl

This is now a discontinued whisky due to the increase in demand for Nikka and the dropping of age statements in view of faster output. This whisky is highly recommended by Dominic Roskrow in his book Whisky.Japan.

A beautiful 10 year old from the Miyagikyou distillery (more recent bottles spell the name "Miyagikyo"). This offers a wonderful purity, floral, fruity, silken smooth. A beautiful balanced dram.

Miyagikyo was built in 1969 by the Nikka Whisky company. Nikka was founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru, a former Suntory employee who had studied at the University of Glasgow, and later trained as a blender at the now lost Hazelburn distillery in Campbeltown. Miyagikyo is primarily a malt distillery, but now also produces Nikka’s grain whisky after it moved the Nishinomaya coffey stills there in the 1999.

A former constituent of the Miyagikyo core range, the 10 year old was discontinued along every other age-statement in 2015 after Nikka were hit by stock shortages due to the unforeseen popularity of their products.

Finish: Broad. Cedar. Winey.

About Miyagikyo

Miyagikyo whisky, a single malt from Nikka's Miyagikyo distillery, is known for its delicate, elegant, and fruity profile, featuring aromas of flowers, fruit, and hints of spice, with a smooth, rich palate that showcases notes of malt, ginger, and cocoa. Founded in 1969 to contrast the peated Yoichi distillery, Miyagikyo uses a gentle distillation process and pure mountain water to create this lighter, balanced, and complex spirit that serves as a great introduction to Japanese whisky.

About Nikka

Nikka Whisky is a Japanese company, founded in 1934 by Masataka Taketsuru – the "Father of Japanese Whisky" – after he studied distilling in Scotland. The brand is known for its two distilleries, the maritime-style Yoichi and the more delicate Miyagikyo, which produce a wide range of single malt and blended whiskies. Nikka blends Scotch-inspired techniques with Japanese precision, creating whiskies renowned for their complexity, balance, and unique character influenced by their distinct environments.
